Der neue 1er!
This year BMW has released their latest 1 series model. Similar in size to the previous generation, yet much more sleek and sexier M-styling. The model we got our hands on, was the 120d with xDrive.
Featuring the Quattro battling, xDrive all-wheel drive system, this model uses a new 2-litre diesel engine that comes with 188bhp and 400Nm of torque. These figures help the little 1er jump from 0-62mph in about 6.8 seconds, and produce a top speed of 138mph. Believe it or not, these are quite impressive numbers for a two litre, four cylinder diesel. Combined with an average fuel economy of 62.8mpg, and CO2 output of 119g/km, that makes the 120d an even more desirable package.
On the road, the eight-speed automatic gearbox handles the power-to-road part very well. The gearbox actually works with the sat-nav to read which type of terrain you’re on, as well as traffic and topography conditions to best suit your driving. The 1er has no problem finding out which gear is optimum for whatever your driving style is, and whatever move you’re calculating next. On the roadways, the power delivery is rather on point, and can get you up to speed in no time.
The new 1er comes standard with rear parking sensors, air conditioning, automatic windscreen wipers, keyless ignition, a sliding front armrest and 16-inch alloy wheels. In addition to that, you also get the Professional radio system, which includes a 6.5-inch screen, CD player, DAB digital radio, Bluetooth connectivity, an aux-in jack and BMW’s iDrive rotary control system.
Interestingly enough, you will also get BMWs ConnectedDrive as standard, which features a SIM card built into the car that allows the driver to access a suite of special features such as their optional ‘Concierge’ service – which is a call centre that can order flowers for your girlfriend and reserve dinner for two at your favorite restaurant across town. Another incredibly useful feature is the real-time traffic information, which is transmitted directly into the sat-nav.
The Navigation Professional system worked perfectly in our car. The system is clear, concise, and very easy to use. This package uses a larger, high resolution 8.8-inch display screen, as well as a touch-sensitive iDrive track pad; along with the traffic info, it’ll also update the systems maps while on the go, too. Another option that was included in the vehicle was the big “M” brakes and suspension kit, which will stop the car on a dime.
If you’ve got $30-$35k to spend on a hot hatch, look no further! The 120d xDrive completely outshines the A3 and CLA in every dimension, this is clearly the one to go for.
