In Depth Look: Mercedes AMG GT S
Mercedes is at it again with the AMG GT, a brilliant spin off of the SLS AMG we all love. One question is on my mind; is it a proper 911/F-Type fighter? I may already have my answer- but I will let you decide. With lots of borrowed technology from the SLS including the front axle and suspension elements, yet very many delicious upgrades.
The numbers:
- 4.0L Biturbo V8
- 510 BHP
- 479 lb-ft of torque
- 0-60 MPH in 3.7 secs
This seemingly short wheel based SLS has its engine pushed far back in the chassis and swung very low, for a greater weight distribution. On the engine, the two turbo chargers are attached to the back of the V-engine; which is an idea stolen from the BMW M5. This makes the motor much smaller which also means the intake lengths are short, thus giving great throttle response which in turn significantly reduces turbo lag.
The AMG GT has an all-new rear axle and dynamic engine mounts which are very important for taking on the 911. A redesigned transaxle, which means the engine is placed in the front, and the gearbox located in the rear. The AMG GT also features a completely redone Getrag dual clutch gearbox and a double wishbone suspension. In all honesty, the GT S is in every way better than the F-type; a better throttle response, better handling and better suspension. But is it better than a 911? In short, the AMG GT is its own creature, it doesn’t want to be a 911 and that’s why we love it.
